The Easter Eggs Stoner includes about personalities, places and urban legends of my hometown of Portland will keep me coming back. Her themes of social justice - particularly around the growing labor movement of the early 20th century, but also its accurate depictions of the broader Progressive movement are a strong appeal. It's wildly entertaining, fast-paced stories with characters who are easy to love and care about. The writing is smooth and clear. The mysteries are always hard, but possible, to solve with the information given us. The plotting is great. But I have to confess the two things I like best are the historical information and the political vision. I live in Portland, Oregon where everything I loved about the place is now being destroyed by gentrification and the union-busting "sharing" economy, workers are being displaced and the city given over to become another playground for the wealthy and the uncaring greedy. So the books could not be more relevant. I finish the book totally inspired and hungry for more. This latest one is no exception. What a joy to read! Set in the Pacific Northwest during the 1900s, Adair, an undercover agent for the Labor movement, is the hot on the trail of a would-be assassin. President Theodore Roosevelt is the target as he makes his tour of the area. If that assignment isn’t daunting enough, during his investigation, the detective stumbles upon a group of community leaders involved in a child sex ring. Mayhem ensues as Adair attempts to foil both schemes, a feat that places those dear to him in harm’s way. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2014 )

Stoner's attention to historical detail draws the reader into the city as it was in 1903. Set a race-to-the-crossing effort to thwart the assassination of the President against a backdrop of the issues and personalities of the day and the result is a darn good mystery.
